Build A Boat!

New! Frequently Asked Questions

Build for the sheer joy and personal satisfaction of creating something beautiful. Think of the satisfaction of saying "I built it myself," when someone else admires your creation. Build to learn how to build your own boat. The Merry Wherry Kit's illustrated assembly manual makes it easy. Among the most precious of life's experiences are the hours spent admiring your own work at the end of a day or the completion of a particularly challenging task.

Owner Built Pride

The Merry rowing boats attract interest and approval from novice and experienced rowers alike. Their sleek looks, ease of handling and elegant lines attract attention wherever they go - at the beach, on the water or being transported. The Merry Kits are a great value compared to other factory-built shells. Enjoy the personal satisfaction of building, and enjoy the personal pride and sheer joy of rowing your Merry rowing boat.

Composite Chine Construction

The composite chine construction, popularly called stitch and glue, is the up-to-date choice for lightweight, easy-to-build boats! Precision machined planks are first joined end-to-end with easy and accurate finger joints especially developed for this kit. The Merry Kits are assembled with simple wire "twist-ties" joining the planks every five inches. The fine hull lines automatically spring into life as the first frames are inserted. No building jig is needed! The seams are then epoxy filled and the wires replaced with fiberglass tape applied over the seam. The resulting ultralight hull (a 55-lb. Two or a 35-lb. Wherry) is quite stiff (substantially more rigid than fiberglass) and has great strength, using hardwood stringers and floors to support one or two Oarmasters.

Premium Materials

New! What's in a kit?

The complete kit includes precision-cut parts of Honduras mahogany hardwood and Okoume marine plywood (British Std. 1088), silicon bronze fasteners, West System Brand® epoxy package (epoxy, hardener, fillers, applicators) and fiberglass tape. Even the bevels are cut on the transom, breasthook and knees! These are the finest materials available. Add the state-of-the-art Oarmaster sculling rigging from Alden Ocean Shell; it's easily removed, adjustable while rowing, and it uses the rower's energy efficiently.

Comprehensive Manual

The proven Assembly Manual includes illustrations and photographs to guide the first-time builder to an enjoyable completion in about 50 hours. The Gougeon Brothers Technical Manual overviews epoxy building techniques. The completely pre-cut kit requires no special tools beyond a handsaw, pliers, drill and handplane.
The Merry Kit family offers proven designs, a complete pre-cut boat-in-a-box building package, at a price that is difficult to match.
